Just two days after his 69th birthday, legendary singerDavid Bowiedied after an 18-month battle with cancer, according to a statement given by his family posted on his social media accounts.

“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer,” his family said. “While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

Bowie’s 40-plus years in the music industry and reputation as one of world’s foremost creatives influenced almost every genre from glam rock to dance and electronic, and every pop and rock artist fromLady Gagaand PharrelltoMotley Crue.

Arguably, he’s had as many looks and reinventions asMadonna, though his most famous was hands-down the androgynous red-haired space alien Ziggy Stardust, his alter-ego from his eponymous 1972 album,The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Throughout the years, his fashion sense morphed and evolved time and time again, always with an eye to the theatrical.

He released his 25th and final album,Blackstar, on his birthday, last Friday.

He is survived by wife, Iman; children, DuncanandAlexandria Jones; and his stepdaughter, Zulekha Haywood.
