How to Choose and Start Wearing Makeup

Steps

  1. Try to figure out what kind of skin tone you have.Look at the veins on your wrist. If they are a greenish tone you have a warm skin tone, if they are blue or purple, you have a cool skin tone. If you have both, your skin could be neutral. Different kinds of colors go with different skin tones.
  2. If you have a warm skin tone, you look better in jewel tones, reds, blues, purples etc.Your foundation should be leaning towards pink, and you look good with pure white and black.
  3. If you have a cool skin tone, you look better in earthy tones, browns, greens, golds etc.Your foundation should be leaning towards pink, you look good in ivory, and should not wear too much black.
  4. Once you've figured out your skin tone, try to find makeup in these tones.Start with more neutral tones, nothing too bright or crazy, because these are harder to get off if you make a mistake. Avoid waterproof things until you are more confident in your makeup applying as these are also very difficult items to get off.
  5. Start with something basic, and natural, for example, some mascara, a little eyeliner, and lip gloss. To apply mascara, brush the wand from root to tip of your lashes, to apply eyeliner, gently pull your lid taut, then draw a thin line, as close to your lashes as possible, from the beginning of your lashes until the end.
  6. Once you feel confident pulling off an easy look, try to get more advanced, and buy concealer, setting powder and foundation. It's important that you get an exact match for your skin tone. Apply concealer first, then foundation, then powder. To apply foundation, dab it on your face, a couple dots all over, then with large sweeping motions blend it in. To apply concealer, put a small dot and gently rub it in with your ring finger or a makeup sponge. To apply powder, drag your brush through the powder, then tap the edge on the edge of the powder, getting rid of any extra. Then using sweeping motions, lightly cover your face. Be sure to always blend into your neck for a natural look
  7. Look up video tutorials of more difficult looks, or figure them out yourself, so that eventually you'll be able to do your own glam looks for parties.

When should a girl start wearing makeup?

    Community Answer
    That's her own choice.
    Thanks!
  • Question
How do I convince my overprotective parents to let me wear makeup? All my friends wear makeup.
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
Start by asking if you can use concealer to cover a pimple and then gradually ask about blush and then mascara. Start with something simple and then gradually work your way up. Don't try the "All my friends do it" argument, that never works.
    Thanks!
  • Question
If I wear lip gloss and mascara every day, what would be the next step for me? Foundation? Concealer? Blush?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
You should choose whatever you feel most comfortable with but a subtle blush is a good next step. Concealer is a good option if you are having problems with acne.
    Thanks!
  • Question
I'm 14 and just starting with makeup, so far I've only used mascara because I can't seem to do eyeliner properly. Any tips?
    wikiHow Contributor
    Community Answer
Contrary to popular belief, it's easier to do eyeliner with your eye open. Try starting from the middle and work your way out. Once you're happy with that, continue the line into the inside corner of your eye. Also, try using a felt tip, they're usually better for beginners.
    Thanks!
  • Question
What are the essential makeup tools that everyone needs if they are gonna start with makeup? Like all the different brushes, etc. I want to start with makeup and want to try eye shadow, what do I need?

Eye shadow is a good starting point. There are several things you'll need. Primer: this could be a tinted primer, could be transparent, but this is a must have if you're only wearing eye shadow. Brushes: if the palette you're buying doesn't come with a brush, you can buy them separately. You'll need a flat packing brush, a crease brush, and a fluffy brush. The shadows: start with neutral shades. The Urban Decay Naked palettes () are great if you're willing to splurge, but I'm sure there are good palettes at the drug store too. Make sure to get a mix of matte and shimmer shadows. Light neutral colors are nice because you don't need eyeliner to finish off the look, just mascara.
    Thanks!
