How to Paint a Mural - from Start to Finish!

How to Draw a Professional Looking Mural (Without Art Classes)

Steps

  1. Select the image you want to replicate.Create a digital version of it for use with a projector.
  2. Clear out a day or two on your schedule, to dedicate to painting.
  3. Rent a projector ahead of time. Most rental companies require at least a few days' notice.
  4. Prep the room.Lay protective covering over the carpet and any furniture that can't be moved during the painting process.
  5. Ensure you have the right kind of paint for your wall surface.
  6. Think about how large you want the projected image to be.Some projectors are meant for smaller screens, and you may not have enough room to pull them back far enough to fill the entire space. If that’s the case, rent a projector that can make your image significantly larger.
  7. When your rental projector arrives, set it up and begin sketching out your image.Use pencil so that you can erase any errors. Outline as much or as little of the image that you want to use. Dim the lights if necessary.
  8. Finally, go over your traced image with a permanent marker or a fine-tipped paint brush. For the outline, use the smallest brush possible. Then, paint in the rest of the image with your selected colors.
  9. Stand back and admire your work!

  • Shop around when renting a projector online - some companies require additional charges for postage, and rental periods vary.
  • You can purchase an inexpensive (less than ) remote control switch that plugs into any outlet. That way, you can keep the "clicker" within reach while painting, and when you want to shut off the projection to ensure you're on the right track, you can easily turn it off or on with a click of the remote.
  • You may choose to keep the projector on with the image projected onto the wall until you're finished painting. This will allow you to get the color gradients you desire and create a more polished overall effect.
  • Invest in quality brushes - it will save you time and create the look you want.
  • Before you start selecting the images that you want to use, think about the space, the décor and furniture you plan on using in the room. For example, in an atrium or similar type space with lots of windows, a nature scene might be your best choice. For a baby’s room on the other hand, you might want cartoon characters, fish or whimsical decorations.

Warnings

  • Don't be discouraged if your first attempt takes longer than you expect - with each mural, you will get faster and more proficient.
