- Being an Empath can be very draining, especially when you don't know why you feel so different from others. Even so, it is also a gift as you help people and the world they live in to heal.
- Do not avoid being who and what you are. If you do, you will only "clog up" and almost always feel "off kilter", anxious and overwhelmed.
- Stay away from "emotional vampires". These are people who are emotionally extremely needy even in the best of times. They will seek you out and drain you. It is extremely important to cut your ties with them.
- Recharge through meditation, spending time in nature, swimming or wading, being with animals etc.
- If possible, look for a spiritual or Empathic friend who may provide you with some feedback or counsel. Being accepted by someone for all of you goes far in accepting all that comes with being an Empath.
- Empaths can usually pick out other Empaths in a group of people. Coffee bistros, new age stores and outdoor places not frequented by most are good places to find another Empath. Twelve step meetings are also healthy in the number of Empaths
- If you have a “slip” and accidentally say something out loud that you should have no way of knowing, do not bury yourself in guilt or shame. Just tell others that you have a knack for picking things up from people at times, and let it go.
- Read, read, read. There is a great deal to learn from other Empaths, their writings, sharing, etc. You can find them by applying to be a member.
- Respect your gift, but only use it when you feel it is right to do so. You will intuitively know.
- The more skillful you are in taking care of yourself and your gift, the better able you will be to help others with the use of this gift.
- Make sure you are not "alone" with this ability and that someone else both knows you and accepts you. Feeling isolated can be debilitating, and if you are "attacked" by even another Empath, you will have support. Your emotional needs count as well.
- If you feel the absolute need to have peace and quiet, or to be alone, or hug a tree, trust your instincts. They will serve you well in helping yourself and others.
- If you think you are beginning to have a problem with drugs or alcohol, you probably are. Get help quickly and devise other strategies to cope with dynamics of being an Empath.
