Keeping track of your BMI can help your body fight off colon cancer, say National Cancer Institute researchers who studied the health history of more than 200,000 women. They found that 50- to 71-year-olds who were just slightly overweight increased their odds of developing the disease by 29%, compared with their leaner peers. Being moderately overweight raised the risk by 31%; being obese, by 49%. Fat cells produce and release hormones that may promote cancer cell growth, says lead researcher Kenneth F. Adams, PhD. Women over 50 years of age who carry extra weight should consider having a screening colonoscopy.
